Short and medium range flight

Hi:

I often use Concorde to fly routes about 3000 nautical miles ,but I find many of them are short rang routes when I travel around the world. When Concorde is flying short and medium range routes, such as those less than 500 nautical miles , will the concorde keep flying at subsonic speed?or will it also fly supersonic speeds but start to decelerate and decend before reaching mach 2 ? How far above the distance will concorde fly supersonic? Anyone can help? Thanks.

It's really impossible to give a definitive answer to that without talking about a specific route.  Each route was planned by specialist planners as an individual entity.

In VERY general terms there would be little to no advantage flying supersonic on a route as short as 500nm but it could be done.  Many charter routes went "the long way round" to extend the route length and provide passengers with a supersonic experience, where flying direct or on the airways would have been all subsonic.

As far as I'm aware the BA round the world charters didn't have routes as short as 500nm and most sectors were between 2000nm and 3600nm so I think you must be flying routes that were either AF or for sales purposes only.   The main factor for supersonic flight was what or who you were going to be flying over... the sea/desert/northern Canada/parts of the middle East could be supersonic, over the USA was a definite no, other countries negotiable but generally where there was a lot of people you had to fly subsonic.
